Bad Programming
First of all, I want to apologize
for the fact that all content from the main domain blog at
www.ces1a.com is gone. It is gone due to some bad programming on the
part of a company I bought a product from in the past. If you have
recently visited www.ces1a.com you may have noticed my Word-press
installation is no longer here.
My blog site was the victim of bad intention programming. I am making
this information public so others can hopefully prevent a similar
situation.
In the explanations that follow I will use a fictitious name for the
actual software that caused the damage to protect the innocent, if
there are any, within the company that sold me the software.
For those who may have been subscribed to our RSS feed I want to let
you know I will get the best of the content back as soon as possible.
In the meantime if you want similar content you can visit my Generic Blog Here.
How It All Started
About 6 months ago I purchased a program which I am
going to call Commission Reputation and installed it here. I had some
problems with the installation and tried to get support from the
Commission Reputation Support Team. They responded to my first and
second questions but after that they ignored all my support requests.
Because I was a Network and Systems Manager prior to retiring a couple
of years ago providing customer and technical support are big issues
for me. And of course I expect good customer and technical support from
any company I purchase products from. However, the customer support at
Commission Reputation is practically non-existent. Since I wasn't
getting the support I needed I obtained a refund on the program.
I then deleted their Word-press installation and replaced it with a
vanilla Word-press installation. Over the last 5 months I had put a lot
of content on the page.
Warning e-Mails
On or about the 21st and 23rd of February 2012 I
received two emails from Commission Reputation about my license being
about to expire. The emails mentioned I had to renew the license or
Commission Reputation would stop working. I replied to one the
Commission Reputation Support Team emails letting them know I was no
longer running their software, but never heard from them again.
Since I had removed their installation and as far as I knew I was no
longer running any Commission Reputation software I deleted the two
warning emails. I figured their records would show I was no longer a
customer and they had no reason to contact me or, what's even worse,
try to force me to pay for a license I don't use.
However, unbeknown to me the Commission Reputation installation had
left some kind of booby trap code or bad programming or malicious
software embedded on my site. On and or about February 24th, 2012 the
malicious code became active and disabled my entire Word-press
installation.
Recovery
I am currently in the process of recovering from the bad
intentions programming deeds performed by the Commission Reputation
programming staff. However, it is going to take me a few days to get
everything back in order.
But please be warned if you happen to be running any software in the
Commission Reputation category that the same thing could happen to you
in the future. It may be a good idea to contact them and find out if
your installation can be guaranteed against any embedded malicious
code.
I have a lot of respect for the person who is the main force behind
Commission Reputation. But it is very possible that he is unaware that
his programmers may be embedding malicious software into the product he
is promoting.
A couple of months ago I purchased Masterful Commissions (also
fictitious to protect the innocent) from the same company and had
problems in that it did not want to run under my Windows 7(64bit). I
contacted the company's support team about the problem and received one
email back telling me that their programmers were aware of the problem.
I waited a while to see if they would get back to me and provide me
with an update or a fix but they never contacted me again. Since I
already had had the poor customer support experience with Commission
Reputation I waited for what I thought was long enough and obtained a
refund. I felt bad because the software appeared very promising if it
would only work.
I realize that a lot of the Internet Marketing programs we buy for
affiliate marketing purposes may be programmed by amateur programmers.
Amateur programmers don't think of providing friendly user interfaces.
Instead they dream up ways to disable the program for customers who
don't upgrade, obtain a refund, or don't update their licenses. This is
just an bad programming or malicious coding. Would you buy a PC or
Apple computer if you knew that the manufacturers would put some
malicious software in the operating system so that if you do not
upgrade it would disable all your other applications and stop running
altogether?
If you are a software provider please insure your programmers develop
worthy applications and avoid unethical programming methods. For
example, you can have a license that becomes invalid if the customer
gets a refund. Disable only your software; don't include malicious
software code to deface or wipe out the customer’s entire website.
Summary
I will put back some of the most interesting content as
soon as possible. But I will continue to put new content in as well. I
just haven't quite figured out if there are any more booby traps or bad
programming or malicious coding that will spring up when I put my
content back. So stay tuned and we'll find out together. Again, if you
